How to make an Autumn Wreath

This blog post it a little step by step guide all about creating your very own Autumn wreath.

Mum and I love making dried floral wreaths, but we also love creating a seasonal wreath to display indoors or by the front door. We thought we would share with you how we made this Autumn wreath. Mum modelled while I took the photographs. We hope you find our step by step guide easy to follow.

To begin with you need to make a wreath base with your chosen vines. We used Virginia Creeper but other options include Beech, Hazel, Honeysuckle, Clematis and Silver Birch. You are looking for anything that is flexible and does not snap. Take a piece of vine and coax it in to a circular shape and then weave any excess around your circle shape. Tucking the end is as you go. Continue to weave in more pieces of vine until you are happy with the thickness and stability.

Below you will see the materials we chose for our wreath, we chose poppy seedheads, ivy, tree ivy, snowberries, hydrangeas, eucalyptus and honesty. When picking honesty if you peel away the outer grubby layers, you will be left with the beautiful shiny interior. These are the materials we found in the garden, feel free to use whatever you can find and forage and have some fun with it. You will also need floristry wire, we use the green coloured wire, and a pair of scissors. But don't worry if you haven't got any wire simply tuck your chosen materials in to the grooves on the wreath base. Wire will just secure it all that little bit more.

Trim the stalks on your flowers or greenery to your desired length and then create a little posy to place on to your wreath. The wreath will be made up of a series of posies. Hold the posy on to the wreath base and begin to wire it on, go round your posy a few times with the wire to hold it in place. Don't cut the wire, we are going to use a continuous length of wire to complete the wreath.

Then simply create another posy, choosing and mixing up the materials as you go.

Attach your posy to your wreath in the same way as above, remembering not to cut the wire.

We are now adding a hydrangea head using the same method, this will be the focal point of our wreath.

Once we have decided our wreath is nearly finished we add another posy but in the opposite direction than the rest of the wreath. This will help finish the look.

Once you have added the last posy, you may notice a small gap where you can see the wire. Simply chose a small flower or a small piece of foliage to fill in the gap. Once you are happy with your completed wreath you simply cut the wire and fasten it at the back of the wreath.

This is our completed Autumn wreath, we hope you have a go too. We hope you found this guide simple to follow, please share with us any of your own creations.

Wreaths are definitely not just for Christmas. They are a favourite feel good of mine all year round. Trust me, if you make one, it will make you smile.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read.

Are these fresh or dried flowers/ greenery? And if they are fresh, will they just dry and look ok on the wreath? Love them, so beautiful! Foraging in the garden this afternoon seeing what I can find! xx
